During the Winter Months

Winter is upon us and we all know what that can mean for our skin!

The cold, icy winds can cause havoc and leave your skin looking tired, dry and sensitive and in need of a little TLC. While indoor heat saps moisture from the air and from your skin. It’s small wonder that these two extreme temperature changes can damage the skin’s natural barrier, making it look and feel dry, itchy and irritated.  I think you would agree with me that we are keen to spend so much time, effort and money on our horses and yet, we somehow overlook what 'our' skin might be needing during the cold winter months.  I’ve highlighted a few tips in the hope to help you achieve a healthier brighter looking skin.

  1. It’s All About Gentle Exfoliation

Gentle exfoliation plays a key role in skin radiance by removing dead skin cells and allowing new, fresh and healthy skin cells to reach the surface to aid towards healthier skin.  It is also important not to use too harsh a product on your skin and also NOT rub too hard, which can often be the case. Overuse of harsh exfoliants may lead to broken capillaries namely facial thread veins (which can be discussed in future articles). Gente exfoliation enables the skin to absorb products more efficiently.

Exfoliants
  1. Choose The Correct Cleanser

Choosing your cleanser. Avoid soap-based cleansers, they have a tendency to dry out the skin. Be selective and choose the one that suits YOUR skin type. Perfumed soaps and anything containing alcohol can irritate sensitive skin and can leave it feeling dry, taut and flaky.

  1. Moisturise, Mostiturise & Moisturise

You may already be moisturising your face but are you using the correct one? Or not as the case may be.  During the winter months, we need to apply a good quality moisturiser to act as a barrier whilst we are outside in all elements, namely the stable yard, riding or at home curled up on the sofa. An oil-based moisturiser will create a protective layer whilst out in the open, offering some respite from the elements, try using a good quality barrier cream. However, women with oily skin should avoid these as the drier environment of winter can actually exacerbate oil production and, when combined with oil-based products, can lead to breakouts.

  1. The Importance of Choosing the Right Products

Whilst we are out and about riding and playing with our horses during the winter months,  it’s good to acknowledge that our skin requires a prescriptive approach during the winter season, so choose products tailored to your skin type.  Many a time at Abate Medispa Sanctuary I’ve heard clients comment that it’s usual for them to buy ‘off the shelf products,’ giving little or no thought as to whether the item purchased is correct for them.  The cost can play a big part in the making of their decision but can products that you grab off the shelf really work for you? Will you really get the results you desire? They claim to disguise, brighten and relieve but are their claims going to meet your requirements?

The Importance of Choosing the Right Products
  1. Self Tan Products

Self-tan can be drying, so take care to exfoliate and moisturise regularly during the winter months so that you can look your best at the parties and balls.  Aim for tanning products designed for sensitive skin, helping to avoid unnecessary dehydration.

  1. Water, Healthy Eating and Sufficient Sleep

Three key components to healthy skin.  Drink plenty of water for hydration aim to drink at least six to eight glasses of water throughout the day. Remember that alcohol and caffeine deplete the body of hydration, so try to limit intake.

Try to eat foods packed full of vitamins, minerals and anti-ageing antioxidants. This will maintain healthy skin, especially during the winter.

Get enough sleep, we really need our sleep so that our cells can restore and repair themselves and help produce healthy radiant skin.

  1. Seek Professional Advice

Don't be shy!

Choosing the correct products from ‘off the shelf’ can be daunting, especially if you have no idea what it is you are looking for or in fact what type of skin you have.  It can be a minefield which is why it’s helpful to seek professional advice from a reputable skin consultant who can direct you and offer professional help. At Abate MediSpa Sanctuary we offer a wide range of results-driven professional skincare products as well as 'state of the art' treatments to help improve the texture and tone of your skin during the winter months.  We offer a free facial analysis which diagnoses skin type and condition an important factor when purchasing facial products.

I hope this information has been helpful, in the meantime happy riding everyone.
